MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team is set to take on Virginia Tech on Tuesday evening at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton. First pitch for the sold out game is set for 6 p.m.
WVU went 2-1 last week with a series win against No. 11 Texas, improving to 26-17 overall and 9-8 in Big 12 competition.
Coach Randy Mazey will send senior right-hander Corey Walter
(1-4, 4.88 ERA) to the mound Tuesday against the Hokies. He last pitched against Marshall (4/23), scattering seven hits over seven innings. He allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
Last weekend against Texas, WVU finished with a team batting average of .340 and a team ERA of 2.67. Senior first baseman Ryan McBroom
went 6-for-13 (.462) with one double and two RBIs. Junior right-hander Sean Carley
made two appearances on the mound, picking up one save. Carley struck out five in 3.0 innings, allowing no runs and one hit.
Junior center fielder Bobby Boyd
is leading the team with a .376 batting average, along with eight doubles, two triples, one home run, 22 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. McBroom is hitting .357 and leading the team with seven homers and 42 RBIs, to go along with 10 doubles. Junior second baseman Billy Fleming
is hitting .352 with five doubles and 25 RBIs, while junior shortstop Taylor Munden
has a team-leading 14 doubles.
The Hokies (19-27, 8-19 ACC) are 1-9 in their last 10 games, dropping two-of-three games at Georgia Tech last weekend.
As a team Virginia Tech is hitting .275, while the pitching staff has an ERA of 5.20.
Catcher Mark Zagunis is leading the team with a .332 batting average, as well as 10 doubles, one triple, one home run and 34 RBIs. Designated hitter Brendon Hayden is batting .302 and leads the team with 13 doubles, seven home runs and 40 RBIs.
