MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track and field team travels to Lubbock, Texas, for the 2014 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 16-18.
The three-day meet begins on Friday at noon, ET, and concludes with the team championship presentations, scheduled for Sunday at 10:50 p.m.
“The name of the game this weekend is to compete,” says coach Sean Cleary. “The conditions will be atrocious with temperatures as high as 99 degrees with very high humidity.”
Four Mountaineer seniors currently rank in the top six in the conference in their respective events.
Seniors Allison Lasnicki and Sarah Martinelli enter the championships ranked No. 3 in the Big 12 in the 10,000 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively.
Senior Stormy Nesbit sits at No. 3 in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 12.71 meters. Nesbit has recorded a season-best jump in each of her last two competitions.
Senior Chené Townsend ranks No. 6 in the conference in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.46.
“Being that the meet is held at altitude, we need to throw times out the window and simply compete,” Cleary says. “Our jumpers and sprinters should have nice conditions to battle their yearly bests.”
Nesbit and Martinelli each earned spots on the podium at the Big 12 Indoor Championships earlier this season, while Lasnicki and Townsend earned redshirts during the indoor season.
“We want to go in and obviously compete better than we have all season,” Cleary says. “We expect to bring home a few All-Big 12 performers while preparing for NCAAs.”
Live results will be provided by and information regarding competition can be found at following the meet.
