Schrand, Verwey Named C-USA All-Academic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior rowers Karen Verwey and Courtney Schrand were named to the Conference USA All-Academic team, announced today by the conference office.
Verwey, a senior from Te Puke, New Zealand, has appeared in every First Varsity 8+ race since her freshman season and has maintained a 3.82 grade point average (GPA) in criminology.
Schrand, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., maintains a 3.97 GPA as an elementary education major. Along with Verwey, she has appeared in every First Varsity 8+ competition since her freshman season. This is Schrand’s second appearance on the C-USA All-Academic Team.
Verwey and Schrand were recipients of the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal and named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team earlier this season.
Fifteen student-athletes were named to the 2014 Conference USA All-Academic Team as voted on by the league's sports information directors for women's rowing.
Kansas State led the way with three honors, while Kansas, Oklahoma and West Virginia were the only other schools to have multiple rowers honored.
The C-USA All-Academic Rowing Team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative GPA or better and are a key contributor to their team. This year's squad each compiled a GPA of 3.65 or better, averaging an impressive 3.904.
