MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two West Virginia University student-athletes were named today to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
, a junior on the National Champion rifle team, was named to the men’s first team, while junior Haily VandePoel
of women’s swimming and diving was named to the women’s first team. This is the second career honor for Kyanko, and the first for VandePoel.
A native of Wellsburg, W.Va., Kyanko earned his undergraduate degree in computer science this month with a 3.90 grade point average (GPA). A three-time National Rifle Association Smallbore Second Team All-American, he finished sixth in smallbore at the 2014 NCAA National Championships. Additionally, he placed fourth in smallbore at the 2014 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships.
A two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team, Kyanko was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Third Team. He is a member of the WVU Honors Program, as well as the President’s and Dean’s Lists and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Kyanko will pursue a master’s in computer science in his final year of athletic eligibility.
VandePoel, a native of Holland, Mich., carries a 4.0 GPA in exercise physiology. A diver, she is one of five student-athletes named to the 10-person first team with a 4.0 GPA. An All-Big 12 Second Team honoree, she finished fourth on the 1m and fifth on the 3m at the 2014 Big 12 Championships. Additionally, she placed seventh on the 1m and eighth on the 3m at the 2014 NCAA Zone “A” Championships.
A two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, she also was twice named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She also is a member of the President’s and Dean’s Lists and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
First Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital Once Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
