MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seven members of the West Virginia University rowing team have been named 2014 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar Athletes.

"This is a notable honor for these young women due to the stringent criteria for combined and sustained academic and athletic performance,” says coach Jimmy King. “They are great representatives of our program on and off the water, epitomizing the idea of the student-athlete."

To qualify, student-athletes must be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, rowed in the institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event, and maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher for their career. Additionally, the head coach of the student-athlete’s institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2014.

Kramer (2), Leach (3), Sapen (2), Schrand (3) and Verwey (3) have been named CRCA Scholar Athletes multiple times throughout their careers.

Seven honorees is the second most CRCA Scholar Athletes in program history. Last season’s eight rowers remains the program best.

"I sincerely appreciate and thank each one of them for the fantastic manner in which they represent our team as well as Mountaineers everywhere," King says.
