MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - On the first day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., earlier tonight, West Virginia junior Allison Lasnicki qualified for the NCAA Finals.

“We are so excited for Allison’s race tonight,” says coach Sean Cleary. “This was a clutch performance in extreme heat and humidity. All we ask of our kids is to do their very best every time out. Laz has never let us down.”

Lasnicki, who was competing in the 10,000 meters, was the lone Mountaineer in competition on day one. Lasnicki finished in 11th place in 34:11.71 to qualify for the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore., on June 11-14.

Three Mountaineers will be in action tomorrow, starting with sophomore Marsielle McBeam at 5 p.m. McBeam will be participating in the high jump. She ranks No. 31 in the event this season with a jump of 1.76 meters.

Chene Townsend will compete in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday at 5:30 p.m. She currently ranks No. 24 in the event after a season-best mark of 13.41 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in her most-recent outing.

Morgantown, W.Va., native Sarah Martinelli will wrap up Friday’s competition for the Mountaineers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Martinelli ranks No. 17 in the event this season and won the 3,000 steeple at the Penn Relays in 10:17.47 earlier in the season.

The top 12 finishers in each event this weekend will advance to the 2014 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships on June 11-14, in Eugene, Ore.
