MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two current members of the West Virginia University baseball team were chosen on the second day of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Center fielder Bobby Boyd was picked by the Houston Astros with the 226th pick in the eighth round and left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave was chosen by the Colorado Rockies with the 233rd pick in the eighth round.
Boyd finished the 2014 season with a Big 12- and team-leading .356 batting average, along with eight doubles, two triples, one homer, 24 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
“It just all feels like a dream. I can’t believe this day has come,” Boyd says. “I want to thank everyone with the Astros for giving me this opportunity.”
Musgrave went 5-3 with a 2.62 earned run average, striking out 87 in 106.1 innings with a .227 opponent batting average. He was previously drafted in 2013 in the 29th round by the Philadelphia Phillies, but did not sign a contract.
“I would like to thank the Rockies organization,” Musgrave says. “It’s a great honor and a new challenge that I look forward to.”
The underclassmen have until Friday, July 18th to decide whether they wish to pursue professional careers or return to WVU. The final day of the draft (rounds 11-40) begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
