MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - For the second straight season, the West Virginia University volleyball team will host Texas on ESPNU at the WVU Coliseum, when the Mountaineers face the Longhorns on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., ET.
Last season, WVU hosted its first-ever match on national television when its home tilt against Texas on Oct. 23, was picked up by the network.
“We are excited to welcome the ESPNU volleyball crew back to the Coliseum for our home match against Texas,” says coach Jill Kramer. “We had an outstanding home match environment for our first televised volleyball match in school history last year and are looking forward to taking it to the next level this year.”
The Mountaineers are coming off their most wins in a single season since 1991 (20), while the Longhorns have appeared in each of the last two Final Fours, including a national championship title in 2012.
The match will serve as the Big 12 Conference opener for both schools. Texas has finished either first or second in the Big 12 regular season standings every season since 2006.
Since West Virginia joined the Big 12 Conference, the Mountaineers have averaged 2,462 fans against the Longhorns at the WVU Coliseum in their two meetings in Morgantown.
In 2012, 3,112 fans attended the first-ever on-campus Big 12 sporting event when WVU hosted Texas on Aug. 29. The crowd is the largest home crowd ever to attend a West Virginia volleyball match.
“I love how much Mountaineer Nation and the Morgantown community have embraced the sport of volleyball and our rising volleyball program,” Kramer says. “We are lucky to have the opportunity to showcase our support across the nation.”
Additional television appearances will be made through Big 12 broadcast partners as well as institutional contracts with several school networks and third-tier partners carrying telecasts throughout the season.
The Big 12 volleyball season begins on Friday, Aug. 29, with conference play starting on Wednesday, September 24.
