MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three members of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team were named today to the Canadian Women’s Under-20 National Team roster for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada at a media event in Toronto, Ontario.
Sophomores Kadeisha Buchanan (defender) and Ashley Lawrence (midfielder), and freshman Amandine Pierre-Louis (forward) will represent the Mountaineers at the tournament, set for Aug. 5-24 at various Canadian stadiums.
“This is such a huge honor for this trio and reflects the hard work, focus and sacrifice each of these ladies has put forth throughout the year,” says WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I am excited and proud that we will have three Mountaineers competing and representing WVU at such a high level.”
In total, 21 athletes were named to the roster. Buchanan and Lawrence are among the standouts, as the duo has seen action on the Canadian Women’s National Team over the past year.
Buchanan, the 2013 Canadian U-20 Player of the Year, will anchor the backline. The Brampton, Ontario, native splashed onto the international scene this summer and is building on the excitement of her first international goal, scored in the Canadian Women’s National Team’s 1-1 draw against the United States on May 8.
Canada is playing in Group A and will open the competition in Toronto with a match against Ghana on Aug. 5 and with Finland on Aug. 8. The team will conclude the group stage on Aug. 12 against Korea DPR in Montreal.
