MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle coach Jon Hammond will compete for Scotland at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, set to open this evening from Glasgow, Scotland, and run until Aug. 3.

Hammond, a native of Aberdeen, will compete in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and prone.

“I’m excited to compete again at the Commonwealth Games,” says the nine-year Mountaineer coach. “It is my one opportunity to compete under the Scottish flag rather than Great Britain’s, and that in itself is such an honor.

“After competing in a home Olympic Summer Games in London two years ago, it is very exciting and unique to have another opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd. Tonight’s opening ceremony should be an incredible atmosphere, and I’m excited for the competitions to begin.”

The prone competition will be held Monday, July 28, and 3 positions will follow on Tuesday. All shooting events will take place at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre, in Carnoustie, Scotland.

Hammond won four medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games - two Gold, one Silver and a Bronze - making him the most successful Scottish Athlete in a single Commonwealth Games.

Hammond has represented Great Britain twice on the Olympic stage, shooting at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games and the 2012 London Summer Games.

The Commonwealth Games are an international, quadrennial event, similar to the Olympics, in which athletes from the members of the Commonwealth of Nations compete. First held in 1930, this year’s games are the 20th overall.

Since his arrival at WVU in 2006, Hammond has led the Mountaineers to three NCAA Championships titles, including the last two, pushing the program’s total to a nation-best 16. WVU also is the five-time defending Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) champions.
