FARGO, N.D.  – WVU assistant coach Nick Marable will represent the United States at the upcoming 2014 World Wrestling Championships after winning Phase II of the Senior Men’s World Team Trials Thursday evening in Fargo, N.D.

The U.S. Open Champion at 70 kilograms (154 pounds), Marable bested James Green of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club to earn his spot on Team USA. Green won the Challenge Tournament earlier in the day for the chance to take on Marable, who is currently ranked the nation’s number one grappler in his weight class.

“It has been a pleasure working with Nick the past year and a half, and today we proved our philosophy that ‘consistency wins,’” said WVU head coach Sammie Henson, who coaches Marable through Sunkist Kids. “This is a new era for the Mountaineers and Nick is a prime example that our system wins. Now, we will get to work preparing him for the World Championships as well as training and recruiting future Mountaineers to buy in and win under our system.”

A late takedown in the first match gave Marable the lead, allowing him to win a close 2-1 decision. He then used a pair of first-period takedowns in match two to take a 7-1 lead before adding another point in the second to win the decision 8-2 and claim his spot on the squad.

Marable becomes the third member of the WVU wrestling coaching staff to qualify for the World Team. Head coach Sammie Henson twice represented the U.S. at the World Championships, winning a gold medal in 1998. Assistant coach Danny Felix donned the red, white and blue at the 2006 World Championships.

“Today was truly an amazing day for our program,” said Henson. “Every member of our coaching staff, as well as our administrator Joe Heskett, has represented Team USA. Not many staffs in our country can say this. Our thanks and appreciation go out to Oliver Luck, Terri Howes and Keli Cunningham for giving us these opportunities.”

Both Marable and Henson will travel to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for the 2014 World Wrestling Champions schedule to take place September 8-14.
