MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck announced today the 2014-15 schedule for the WVU swimming and diving squad.
The slate features four meets at the WVU Natatorium, including the Gold-Blue intrasquad meet to open the season on Friday, Oct. 3.
“Coach Vic Riggs and his staff have compiled an impressive schedule for the 2014-15 campaign,” says Luck. “In addition to Big 12 Conference opponents, the slate includes matchups with regional opponents such as Penn State, Ohio State and Pitt. I’m excited to watch this program build on its success from a year ago.”
For the fourth consecutive season, the Mountaineers will participate in the West Virginia State Games. The meet includes multiple in-state opponents, including Marshall, and the host is alternated each season between WVU and Marshall. This season, it will be held in Huntington, West Virginia, on Oct. 10-11.
“I feel this year's schedule offers a great number of opportunities for the teams to prepare for Big12s and NCAAs. Adding Iowa State will be an exciting trip for our women's team and adding another Big 12 team was important to our schedule,” says Riggs. “Having TCU coming in for the third year of our duals has increased the friendly rivalry (Coach) Richard (Sybesma) and I have between our teams.”
The non-conference schedule is highlighted by a home matchup with Penn State (Oct. 23), a trip to the Mizzou Invite in Columbia, Missouri (Nov. 20-22), a road matchup with Pitt (Jan. 10) and competition at the USA Winter Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina (Dec. 4-6).
“Returning to the Mizzou Invite and attending USA Winter nationals will give the teams great prelim and finals meets in the fall semester,” Riggs says. “Of course having Pitt to start off our spring semester is always fun and challenging. Overall, it's a nice mix of challenging dual meets and championship meets to prepare the teams for our end of the season goals.”
For the third straight year, Riggs and the Mountaineers will spend a portion of their winter break participating at the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, Florida. West Virginia has recorded a second-place finish at the event each of the last two seasons.
Conference matchups include a home meet against TCU on Jan. 16 and a road meet against Iowa State women on Jan. 24. The Mountaineers will conclude the regular season with the men competing against Ohio State on Jan. 30 and the women battling with Ohio on Jan. 31.
The 2014-15 Big 12 Championships will be held Feb. 25-28 in Austin, Texas.
