MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three from the No. 12-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team have been named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Soccer Team, as selected by the league’s head coaches, the conference office announced today.
Senior Kate Schwindel (forward) and sophomores Kadeisha Buchanan (defender) and Ashley Lawrence (forward) earned the preseason honor. The trio were all named to the 2013 All-Big 12 First Team, with Buchanan garnering Big 12 Defender and Newcomer of the Year honors.
“It is always good for opposing coaches to recognize our student-athletes, and I’m happy for these three,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.
WVU’s three honorees are tops among the conference and tied with Oklahoma State. The Big 12 coaches unanimously picked the Mountaineers to win the 2014 Big 12 Conference title, as announced yesterday.
Conference coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Buchanan has garnered multiple preseason honors this month. A native of Brampton, Ontario, she was named to the 2014 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy Watch List on August 6. She also was named to the College Sports Madness 2014 Preseason All-America First Team and the TopDrawerSoccer.com Preseason Best XI First Team.
Buchanan, Lawrence and redshirt-freshman Amandine Pierre-Louis are currently competing for Canada at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada. The team secured a 1-0 win over Korea DPR on Aug. 12 and advanced to the knockout round. Canada will face Germany on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. ET, at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
The Mountaineers are the two-time defending Big 12 regular-season champions and the defending Big 12 Soccer Tournament champions. The squad boasts a 14-1-1 conference record in two seasons of play.
WVU concludes preseason play on Saturday with a scrimmage against Navy at 1 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
