Women's Soccer Ranked No. 10

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four days removed from its 2014 season opener, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned the No. 10 ranking in today’s Division I Women’s Top 25 Rankings.
“Today’s recognition from is a plus as we head into our opening weekend,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “As always, we need to maintain our focus and attention on where we want to finish the season.”
The Mountaineers are the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team, with Texas Tech checking in at No. 15. WVU will face four teams ranked in today’s poll: No. 11. Penn State, No. 12 Duke, the No. 15 Red Raiders and No. 19 Georgetown.
WVU finished 2013 ranked No. 8 in the final Top 25 Rankings.
The Mountaineers also are ranked No. 20 in BennettRank’s Women’s Soccer Top 25 Rankings.
Ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason College Rankings, the Mountaineers, the two-time defending Big 12 Conference regular-season champions and 2013 Big 12 Soccer Tournament champions, were the unanimous pick by the league’s coaches to win the conference title, as announced on Aug. 13. Senior Kate Schwindel (forward), and sophomores Kadeisha Buchanan (defender) and Ashley Lawrence (forward) were named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Soccer Team. Buchanan also is one of 35 athletes named to the 2014 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy Watch List.
The Mountaineers open their 2014 slate at the Penn State Invitational this Friday, Aug. 22, against the Nittany Lions, at 7:30 p.m., at Jeffrey Field, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
