WVU Finishes Day One at Tribe Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.VaThe West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened the fall season earlier today at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational with a pair of doubles victories and a singles win. 
“Today we saw a step in the right direction for the team in singles,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “We are looking to build upon our play tomorrow with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles.”
WVU opened the day with a doubles match against Liberty, where the Mountaineers were able to win two of the four contests against the Flames. Freshman Christina Jordan recorded her first career doubles win with junior Carolina Lewis, as the tandem defeated Liberty’s Emily Groeneveld and Mariely Hassey, 8-6. Yvon Martinez and Abby Rosiello closed out the first match of the tournament edging Audrey Brown and Eugenia Camacho 8-7 (1) in a tiebreaker. Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz fell 8-6 to Liberty’s Evangeline Crist and Anna Dollar. Also, Kaja Mrgole and Habiba Shaker narrowly lost, 8-6, to the Flames’ Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko.
The Mountaineers closed out day one with a singles match against Dartmouth. Choo, a junior for the Mountaineers, was the lone WVU victor as she defeated Dartmouth’s Shannon Mukerji in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Shaker fell in three sets to Taylor Ng (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Jordan also lost a three-set match (1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5) to Allison Chuang. Goetz fell to the Big Green’s Racquel Lyn, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and  Lewis narrowly lost 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 to Allison McCann. Mrgole also fell 6-4, 6-4 to Chuyang Guan.
The William & Mary Tribe Invitational resumes for the Mountaineers on Saturday as they take on in-state rival Marshall in a doubles match at 9:30 a.m. at the McCormack-Nagelson Indoor Tennis Courts. WVU then faces Maryland in a singles match at 11 a.m. followed by a doubles match against Old Dominion at 3 p.m.
