MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University women’s tennis recorded a pairs of victories in doubles, as well as a singles, on the second day of the Little Rock Classic in Little Rock, Arkansas on September 24.
WVU opened the day with doubles play as the Mountaineers won two of three matches. Senior Kaja Mrgole
and Lyn Yuen Choo
defeated Kansas’ Janet Koch and Nikolaeva 6-4 for their second win of the tournament. Yvon Martinez
and Paula Goetz
beat Arkansas’ Peyton Jennings and Sasha Shkorupeieva, 6-2. The number one doubles pair of Habiba Shaker
and Christina Jordan
rallied from behind, but ultimately fell to the Razorbacks’ Ana Oparenovic and Mia Jurasic 6-4.
“We had steady performances today in doubles by Yvon (Martinez) and Paula (Goetz), as well as Kaja (Mrgole) and Lyn Yuen Choo
,” coach Miha Lisac said. “Habiba (Shaker) and Christina (Jordan) battled back well in their match, but fell short.”
In singles play, Shaker fell to No. 49 Anastasia Rychagova of Kansas 6-4, 6-4. Also in Flight A, the Jayhawks’ Nina Khmelnitckaia defeated freshman Christina Jordan
in three sets, 6-0, 6-4 and 7-5. In Fight B, Choo fell to TCU’s Caroline Wegner 6-2 and 6-2. Martinez, a sophomore, was the lone victor for the Mountaineers in singles play as she defeated Arkansas’ Myrna Olaya in three sets, 6-4, 3-6 and 7-6 (6).
“We found ourselves in a battle in singles play today and showed some positive things, but we will work on converting more opportunities tomorrow. Yvon (Martinez) came through in a tough battle today,” Lisac said.
The Mountaineers will conclude the Little Rock Classic on Sunday. Tournament play from the Little Rock Country Club will begin at 10 a.m. ET.
