MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened play on Friday at the Viking Invitational with four doubles victories and a pair of wins in singles play.

“It was good to get a lot of matches in today and give the whole team opportunities to compete,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “We had a slower start in the morning singles but were able to rebound into doubles play.”

WVU opened the day with a singles match against Akron, where the Mountaineers won two of the six contests against the Zips. It was a closely fought battle, where four matches went to the third set. In the No.1 position, Habiba Shaker defeated Akron’s Ariadna Blinova, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9). At the No.2 slot, Paula Goetz fell to Sophia Geier, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Senior Kaja Mrgole fell to the Zips’ Karalina Maksimava 6-4 and 7-5. At No.4, Lyn Yuen Choo fell to Luisa Echeverry in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3)). Akron’s Rita Pedroso defeated Carolina Lewis in a close-three set match (1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8)). At No. 6, Freshman Christina Jordan bested Carli Knezevich, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (1).

The Mountaineers then faced host Cleveland State in a doubles match. WVU bested the Vikings in two of the three doubles matches. In the first match, Mrgole and Jordan fell to Aleksandra Golawska and Isabella Spindler, 6-3. Abigail Rosiello and Shaker defeated the Vikings’ Princess Bgadamosi and Jana Schober, 7-5. In her Mountaineer debut, redshirt sophomore Makenzie Stolar teamed with Choo to defeat Victoria Bensimon and Blanche Lenoan 6-2.

WVU closed out the opening day of the Viking Invitational with a doubles match against Duquesne. Again, the Mountaineers came away with victories in two-of-three matches. Mrgole and Goetz fell to Kylie Isaacs and Julianne Herman in the first match, 6-3. In the second match, Shaker and Martinez defeated Megan Wasson and Aishwarya Kona, 6-1. The duo of Lewis and Rosiello bested Zuzanna Stelmaszak and Koralie Etienne, 6-4 to close out the match.

The Viking Invitational resumes for the Mountaineers on Saturday, October 8, as they take on Duquesne in a doubles match at 1 p.m. at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. WVU then faces Akron in a doubles match at 1:30 p.m. followed by a singles match against Old Dominion at 3 p.m.
