MORGANTOWN, W.Va (October 9, 2016) – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team recorded three wins in singles and posted three wins in doubles play to close out the final day of the Viking Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 9.
“We finished the tournament on a high note in doubles,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “Overall, we saw some great progress this weekend.”
The Mountaineers began the final day with a singles match against Duquesne, where they were able to win three of the seven contests. At the No.1 position, Lyn Yuen Choo
fell to Julianne Herman, 6-1 and 6-4. Carolina Lewis
gave the Mountaineers their first win of the day when she defeated Kylie Isaacs, 6-3 and 7-6 (6). Paula Goetz
bested Laurel Shymansky in two sets, 6-1 and 6-1. At the No.4 slot, freshman Christina Jordan
fell to Aishwarya Kona 6-3 and 6-2. Yvon Martinez
earned a win over Zuzanna Stelmaszak, 6-3 and 6-3. Abigail Rosiello
and Makenzie Stolar
each lost their matchups in two sets, with Rosiello falling to Megan Wasson (6-4,6-3) and Stolar falling to Sara Mitrovic (6-1,6-1).
WVU then faced host Cleveland State in a doubles match to wrap up the Viking Invitational. The Mountaineers were victorious in all three match-ups against the Vikings. Shaker and Choo teamed up to down Aleksandra Golawska and Isabella Spindler in a closely contested match, 7-6 (7). Goetz and Jordan defeated Victoria Bensimon and Princess Gbadamosi 7-5. In the final match, the duo of Lewis and Martinez dropped Katy Quillin and Morgan Nix, 6-0.
In all, WVU won 12 of their 15 doubles matches and nine singles matches over the course of the weekend. Lewis led the Mountaineers with four doubles victories and two wins in singles play.
The Mountaineers will head to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships from Friday, October 14 to Tuesday, October 18.
