MORGANTOWN, W.Va –
West Virginia University junior tennis player Habiba Shaker
fell in the second round of the singles main draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on Sunday in Norfolk, Virginia.
Virginia’s Rosie Johanson bested Shaker in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1, at the indoor courts of the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
“We had a solid tournament facing good competition,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “It gives us a good sense of direction of what we have accomplished this fall and what we have to work on this spring.”
WVU was able to win three singles events at the three-day tournament. Paula Goetz
and Carolina Lewis
won matches in the singles backdraw and Shaker won on Saturday in the first round of the Singles Main Draw.
The ITA Regionals were the final fall competition for the Mountaineers. WVU will open the spring campaign on January 21, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, against Pitt. The first home match will be on January 28, as the Mountaineers take on the Akron Zips. All home matches will be held at the Ridgeview Tennis Club until weather permits outdoor play.
