WVU Takes 13th at MSA Intercollegiate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Slipping two spots, the West Virginia University golf team finished in 13th place at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Alabama.
 
The Mountaineers shot a 310 in the final round of play to finish at 292-295-310=897. They shot 33 over par as a team. Louisville took top honors, shooting eight under par with a score of 856. Host South Alabama came in second with an 859 for five under par, while Mississippi State and Chattanooga claimed third at two under par with final scores of 862.
 
“We did not handle the adverse conditions very well today,” coach Sean Covich said. “Until our guys start to prepare like professionals, we will probably continue to see results like this, unfortunately. Max Sear showed a lot of fight out there today. I’m proud of his final round.”
 
Sear finished even par through the final 18 holes, tallying a total score of 75-74-72=221 for five over par. He moved up eight spots to tie for 34th place after carding five birdies in the final round.
 
Tristan Nicholls finished seven over par on the day and eight over par in the tournament to tie for 44th place. He shot 72-73-79 to finish with a 224. Chris Williams followed with a 225, tying for 51st place. He carded a score of 74-72-79 for nine over par.
 
Alan Cooke finished at 14 over par, shooting 71-79-80=230 for 62nd place. Etienne Papineau took 67th with a score of 79-76-80=235 for 19 over.
 
In the USA Individual Tournament, Avery Schneider and Drew Dewald both shot 77 in the final round and tied for 24th place at 20 over par. Schneider shot 82-74-77=233, while Dewald finished at 77-79-77=233. Jon Ransone finished tied for 28th with a final score of 74-81-81=236 for 23 over par.
 
The Mountaineers return to Alabama on March 5-6 to compete in the Tiger Invitational Presented by Jason Dufner at Grand National Golf Club in Opelika.
