MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University sophomore guard Tynice Martin was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region 3 team, as announced by the organization on Thursday.
Martin is one of 52 candidates for the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team. The WBCA All-Region honor is the first for the sophomore. The WBCA All-America Team will be announced next week at the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four in Dallas.
This season, Martin was a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection. She scored 82 points in the Big 12 Championship for third-most all-time and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Martin tallied three 30-point games this season, including a Big 12 Championship final game-record 32 points in WVU’s 77-66 victory over Baylor (March 6) to claim the tournament crown. Martin became the 34th Mountaineer overall and the third-quickest to reach the 1,000-point milestone with her 26 points in the NCAA Tournament First Round victory over Elon (March 17).
Martin finished second in the Big 12 with 18.6 points per game, fifth in treys made (2.2), fifth in steals (1.8 spg), sixth in free throw percentage (81.8%), 11th in field goal percentage (36.5%) and led the conference in minutes played (35.6 mpg).  Nationally, Martin is sixth in minutes played (1,246), 19th in final points (651), 29th in field goals made (227) and 41st points per game (18.6 ppg).
The sophomore from Atlanta etched her name in many of WVU’s sophomore and single-season records. Her 651 points were third-most by a Mountaineer sophomore and sixth all-time. Her scoring average of 18.6 points per game are fourth for a sophomore and 10th in program history. She produced 13 20-point games, which are fourth for a West Virginia sophomore and the most since Meg Bulger in 2005.
Martin is the sixth Mountaineer to garner WBCA All-Region accolades and only the second sophomore in program history, joining Meg Bulger’s All-Region 1 selection in 2005. West Virginia has had one representative on the WBCA All-Region team the last four years: Asya Bussie (2014), Bria Holmes (2015, 2016) and Martin (2017).
Other WBCA All-Region 3 team members include: Ariel Atkins (Texas), Kalani Brown (Baylor), Napheesa Collier (Connecticut), Nina Davis (Baylor), Feyonda Fitzgerald (Temple), Kitiha Laksa (South Florida), Breanna Lewis (Kansas State), Brooke McCarty (Texas), Katie Lou Samuelson (Connecticut) and Gabby Williams (Connecticut).
