Big 12 Honors Mountaineer Freshmen

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Thirty-four West Virginia University freshmen student-athletes were named to the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team, as announced by the conference today.
 
Student-athletes, who were incoming freshmen at their respective Big 12 institutions, were eligible for selection.
 
 
Baylor led all schools with 62 honorees, followed by Texas (55) and Kansas (53). A total of 441 student-athletes were honored for the 2016-17 season.
 
Three Mountaineers selected were among the 46 nominated with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA): Bailey Thomas (women’s basketball), Abby Kaufman (gymnastics) and Miranda Marcucci (women’s swimming and diving).
 
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams led WVU with 10 honorees: Jack Frazier, Luke Hene, Ryan Kelly, Sam Neaveill, Jack Portmann, Gabe Swardson, Julia Miranda, Alexandra Pampalone, Brooke Zedar and Marcucci.
 
The track and field team garnered five selections in Amanda Barnes, Alexis Baublitz, Gina Cuneo, Megan Silva and Kyrielle Williams, while the rowing team saw Gabrielle Boylan, Hannah Hammon, Lindsay Krawczyk and Hannah Simmerly honored.
 
Carter Camp, Kade Strowd and Riley Troutt of baseball were honored, and Maciej Bender and Chase Harler of men’s basketball joined them on the list, as did football’s Adam Hensley and golf’s Etienne Papineau.
 
Kaufman was joined by teammates Kassidy Cumber and Julia Merwin, and Jade Gentile represented the women’s soccer team.
 
The volleyball team earned a pair of selections in Gabrielle Cuckovich and Katelyn Evans, and Dayton Garrett of wrestling also was honored.
 
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen, who have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
 
The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
