MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second straight season, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team is the unanimous No. 1 pick in the Big 12 Conference Preseason Poll, as announced today by the league office.
Nationally ranked No. 1, the Mountaineers top the poll for the fifth straight season. Also unanimously picked No. 1 in 2014, WVU is the only team in conference history to earn multiple unanimous selections.
Today’s poll is based on votes by the Big 12 Conference’s 10 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.
Kansas received one first-place vote and ranks No. 2 in today’s poll. No. 16-ranked Oklahoma sits at No. 3, while Texas Tech ranks No. 4 and Baylor is No. 5.
Oklahoma State ranks No. 6, TCU ranks No. 7 and Texas follows at No. 8. Iowa State and Kansas State round out the poll at Nos. 9 and 10. This season marks the Wildcats’ first in Big 12 play.
The Mountaineers are the five-time reigning conference regular-season champion. WVU has swept the conference titles in three of the last four years, also winning the Big 12 Soccer Championship crown in 2013, 2014 and 2016. No other school in conference history has earned the preseason No. 1 ranking and also won the regular-season and postseason titles as many times as WVU.
WVU is 35-1-3 all-time in Big 12 play and unbeaten at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers posted an 8-0 mark in 2016, their first undefeated season, and became the second program and third team in Big 12 history to finish league play unbeaten and untied. Nebraska previously achieved the feat in 1996 and 1999. WVU did not allow a goal in conference play, posting the first shutout season in Big 12 history.
Since 2014, WVU is 21-0-2 in Big 12 Conference regular-season games. It is the longest unbeaten streak in conference history. The Mountaineers are the first program in Big 12 history to win three straight conference regular-season crowns with unbeaten records.
WVU rides a 34-match unbeaten streak in conference games at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium into the 2017 season, as the Mountaineers have not lost a league contest in Morgantown since falling, 3-2 in overtime to No. 8 Notre Dame on Oct. 2, 2009.
The Mountaineers close their 2017 exhibition season against Bowling Green on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 1 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
