Gary McPherson is the Senior Director of Development for the Mountaineer Athletic Club. His involvement with the Mountaineer Athletic Club began in 1993 when he was appointed Director of Athletic Development.

In his current role, McPherson heads up the athletic department’s Wheels Club program and helps coordinate the annual Coaches’ Caravan that tours the state and surrounding region. He also is involved in scholarship endowments, planned giving and major gift work.

Before joining the MAC, McPherson enjoyed a 33-year coaching tenure, most notably serving stints on Gale Catlett’s Cincinnati and West Virginia staffs from 1976-93. McPherson was the head basketball coach at VMI (where he led the Keydets to the NCAA tournament as the youngest major college head coach at the age of 27) and at Alderson-Broaddus College. McPherson also had a five-year stint on Sonny Moran’s staff at WVU from 1969-74.

During his coaching career McPherson served a three-year term on the Assistant Coaches Committee of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of America (NABC).

A native of Cass, W.Va., McPherson was a three-year letterman in basketball at Washington & Lee, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1958. He later earned his master’s degree from the University of Virginia.

Gary and his wife, Peggy, have two adult children – Chris and Missy.
