Mary Ellen Jones, who has a wealth of collegiate experience in athletic administration, compliance, development, academic advising and coaching, joined the WVU Athletic Department staff in May 2012 as Director of Sports Administration.

Jones came to West Virginia from Texas State, where she spent three years as the assistant athletic director for compliance. While there, Jones managed the athletic department’s entire compliance program.

Prior to Texas State, Jones was a stewardship administrator for the USF Foundation in 2008-09. While she was at USF, Jones also participated in peer review team training for NCAA third cycle athletic certification.

In 2007-08, she served as assistant director for the Athletic Academic Affairs Department at Oklahoma, where she helped review issues related to the NCAA Academic Performance Program, advised student-athletes and assessed their NCAA progress toward degree and fulfillment of NCAA eligibility requirements.

Before she joined the staff at Oklahoma, Jones was the director of compliance at the Big 12 Conference, where she assisted conference member institutions in understanding NCAA legislation and interpretations. She also coordinated the rules education program, managed the National Letter of Intent program and coaches’ certification exams, and served as the primary liaison to directors of compliance and Big 12 student-athlete advisory committee. Jones was promoted to the director position at the Big 12 after serving three years as an assistant director of compliance.

Jones began her career in compliance at the NCAA office, where she served as an Enforcement Services Intern in 2002-03. In addition, Jones also has experience in coaching after serving as an assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Earlham College in 2001-02.

A native of Canastota, N.Y., Jones earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration at SUNY Brockport in 2000, where she was a four-year letterwinner in field hockey and a three-year letterwinner in lacrosse. She earned her master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at Ball State in 2002.

She is married to Curtis Jones, WVU’s Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services.
