Mountaineers Tally Shutout Win Over Arizona State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team (8-2-2, 3-0-2 Big 12) collected a convincing, 2-0 win over Arizona State at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers used goals from sophomore midfielder Maddie Levy and sophomore forward/defender Sophia Nickel to remain unbeaten in Big 12 Conference play. Of note, WVU is currently on a nine-match unbeaten streak as it has not lost a game since Aug. 24.
Levy was credited with the game-winning goal for the second straight match after opening the scoring in the 27th minute. She was positioned perfectly at the top of the box to receive a pair of one-touch passes from senior forward Ajanae Respass and junior midfielder Anna Hauer to put WVU on the board.
In the second half, the Mountaineers saw several chances to add to their lead, but the insurance goal didn't come until the 89th minute. As Arizona State was pressing for the equalizer, Nickel intercepted a pass near midfield and beat the Sun Devils keeper to score on an open net. The goal marked the Golden, Colorado, native's first collegiate tally.
In the final box score, WVU outshot Arizona State, 14-6, including 4-1 in shots on goal. There were several corner kick opportunities for both teams in the match, including 10 for West Virginia and nine for ASU. Redshirt junior keeper Bailey Herfurth and the Mountaineer defense earned their eighth clean sheet of the season, holding the Sun Devils to just one shot on goal in the match.
With the win, WVU moved to 2-0 all-time against Arizona State, while it also earned its first win over the Sun Devils in Morgantown.
West Virginia now looks forward to a one-game week, as it closes its three-game homestand against Houston on Friday, Oct. 10. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is slated for 7 p.m. ET. It's Fan Appreciation Night, and the first 200 fans will be given a raffle ticket to redeem for an exclusive WVU coffee mug at the conclusion of the game.
