MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team turned in a solid showing on the water Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
"It was good to hear from our crews that some of the technical elements we've been working on in training were sticking in Saturday's racing, especially in windy conditions," coach Jimmy King said. "While we're certainly making progress, we know there's much more progress to be made, and that's exciting for what's ahead."
The Mountaineers started the day with the Varsity 8+ earning a third-place finish, led by senior coxswain Grace Terlion coming in at 17:52:992, trailing Georgetown (17:19:725) in first and High Point (17:35:489) in second. WVU's second boat of the 17 entries was coxed by senior Grace Holliday and finished ninth with a time of 18:46:795.
In the JV 8+, WVU took fifth and sixth place in an 11-boat race. The fifth-place finish was led by freshman coxswain Emily Gubbins (19:07:989). It was followed by sophomore coxswain Olivia Pennington's boat, which came in at 19:42:948. Old Dominion secured first place in the event with a time of 18:06:800.
Holliday's Varsity 4+ boat secured the team's best finish of the day in second place (19:28:648) behind High Point at 18:55:828. Additional entries for the Varsity 4+ placed seventh (19:54:500), led by Terlion, and ninth (20:01:469), coxed by senior Grace Fay, in an event with 22 entries.
Concluding the day in the JV 4+, which featured 14 entries, WVU's boat coxed by freshman Giada Fassacesia placed fifth with a time of 21:17.552, while the crew led by freshman coxswain Lauren Keyser secured eighth place, finishing in 21:34.213.
