Matthew Stone joined the West Virginia men's basketball program during the summer of 2025 as a graduate assistant for head coach Ross Hodge.
As a graduate assistant, Stone helps the coaching staff with scouting and video, player development and culture building. He’s earning his Master of Science in Sports Management at WVU.
Stone was a four-year letterwinner at North Texas from 2021-25 where he played for Hodge and is the program’s all-time winningest player. In his four seasons, the Mean Green won 103 games, were the 2023 NIT champions and won the 2022 Conference USA title. UNT won 25 or more games in three of his four seasons in Denton, including twice breaking the program record for single season wins. UNT won at least 14 conference games in three of Stone’s four years and twice won 16 league games.
Stone was a team captain and started six games at UNT and was a critical defensive piece to the Mean Green, which led the nation in scoring defense in two of his four seasons. He scored 164 points, grabbed 162 rebounds and dished out 57 assists at North Texas. He was twice awarded the Mean Green Spirit Award.
Stone is a native of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and was recruited to UNT by then head coach Grant McCasland. He played two seasons for McCasland before Hodge was elevated to North Texas head coach in 2023.
At Kingfisher High School Stone was a four-year letterwinner and had a combined 107-4 record. He led Kingfisher to two 4A state championships (2019 and 2021). He scored 1,538 points in high school and was named all-state as a senior in 2021.
Stone earned his bachelor’s degree in Video, Broadcast and Multimedia from UNT in 2025. His goal is to become a head basketball coach one day and to continue to make a meaningful impact on young basketball players by supporting their development both on and off the court and success beyond the game.
