
Mountaineers Drop Tight Five-Set Battle to Utah at Home

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (13–7, 1–7 Big 12) was narrowly defeated by Utah (10–10, 2–7 Big 12) in a five-set contest on Friday night inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va. The match concluded with set scores of 20–25, 25–20, 25–23, 19–25, and 11–15.
West Virginia recorded 13 kills on a .250 hitting percentage in the first set and dropped the frame. The team responded in the second set with 14 kills and a .472 clip to even the match. In the third, WVU posted another 13 kills and hit .214 to take the lead. Set four saw a decline, with just nine kills and a .054 efficiency. In the fifth and final set, the Mountaineers managed six kills but hit .000, ending the match with a loss.
The Mountaineers wrapped up the match with 59 kills on 170 attempts, finishing with a .218 hitting percentage. The offense was led by 55 assists and 10 service aces, while the defense added 66 digs and 11 total blocks, including two solo blocks and 20 block assists.
Redshirt junior right side hitter Trinity Sheridan delivered one of her best performances of the season, recording a season-high 17 kills on 40 attempts (.325), five digs, and five total blocks for a team-best 19.5 points. Junior outside hitter Nina Horning recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with 15 kills and 10 digs. She also added three service aces and two total blocks for 19 points.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton made an impact in limited action, recording seven kills on eight attempts (.875) and two digs. Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim added five kills on 12 attempts (.333) and led the team with eight total blocks.
Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath posted five kills and four total blocks, while senior opposite hitter Lauren Bodily chipped in five kills and one total block. Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott contributed five kills and seven digs.
Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold paced the offense with 36 assists, five service aces, eight digs, and one total block. Senior libero LonDynn Betts led all players in digs, finishing with a match-high 23. She anchored the back row and added four assists to her defensive effort. Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter tallied two digs, and freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner added 12 assists.
West Virginia returns to action next Thursday, Oct. 30, against Houston at 6 p.m. inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va.
